Safer Truck Routing with Zeo: Avoid Risky Roads & Overloads

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Updated on: August 3, 2025

The wrong road can cost you more than just time. For fleet operators handling oversized vehicles or fragile goods, a single instance of encountering a low bridge, narrow tunnel, or forced ferry ride can result in route violations, cargo damage, or compliance penalties.

That’s why route planning for heavy trucks isn’t just about reaching the stop. It helps get your heavy trucks and sensitive cargo to their destinations safely, legally, and efficiently.

Zeo Route Planner helps fleet owners and dispatchers with tools to avoid high-risk segments, stay within load limits, and keep drivers informed at every turn. From road-type exclusions to vehicle-specific optimization, Zeo builds a safer route from the start.

Why Safe Routing Matters for Fleets

  1. Low-clearance bridges, unstable fords, or restricted tunnels
  2. Last-minute diversions causing delay or route abandonment
  3. Fines due to vehicle weight, height, or type violations
  4. Driver stress and an increased chance of damage or incidents

And beyond the physical risks, poor route decisions eat into your margins. Unplanned fuel costs, rescheduling, and damaged goods add up quickly.

Using Zeo Route Planner to Avoid Risk-Prone Routes

In logistics, the fastest route isn’t always the safest, especially for heavy vehicles or sensitive cargo. Zeo Route Planner makes it easier to steer clear of roads that pose risks, from low-clearance bridges to ferry-only segments. With just a few settings, dispatchers can customize routing rules that match the ground realities of their fleet.
This control matters. One wrong turn into a tunnel or over a restricted bridge can delay the entire day, damage cargo, or even result in fines.

Zeo solves that by giving you the option to pre-define road types to avoid and then automatically applying those rules across all generated routes.

Avoid Params
Zeo’s “Avoid Params” feature is where the routing logic begins. Use this feature to define which types of roads should never be included in a route. This is useful for vehicles that cannot pass through tunnels or cross bridges due to weight or structural restrictions.

You can instruct the planner to bypass specific road types such as:

  • Trunk roads – often congested or unsuitable for wide loads
  • Bridges – useful for avoiding weight-restricted or low-clearance crossings
  • Fords – water crossings, risky in rainy seasons
  • Tunnels – not ideal for vehicles carrying hazardous materials
  • Ferries – add unpredictability to delivery timelines

Once saved, these preferences are applied automatically to future route plans, saving dispatchers the need to manually check route safety repeatedly.

How to Set It:

Set Params

  1. Go to Profile → Preferences
  2. Select Avoid Params
  3. Choose road types to skip: Highway, Trunk, Bridge, Ford, Tunnel, Ferry
  4. Hit Save: These exclusions now apply to all new routes

What It Does

  • Removes unsafe road segments from the route logic
  • Automatically applies rules to all new route plans
  • Keeps vehicle types matched with road conditions
  • Especially useful for fleets with strict regulatory limits

Set Load Limits and Avoid Overweight Violations
When a truck carries more than it should, the risk stacks up fast on brakes, suspension, and driver control. Even running slightly above safe load thresholds can lead to breakdowns, compliance violations, or accidents. Zeo helps you avoid such issues.

Set Vehicle Capacity
You can now set vehicle capacity, volume, and load margins in advance while defining how much a truck should carry. Zeo handles the rest, giving you complete control over how each vehicle is used by allowing you to define its maximum load, available space, and operational safety margins.

Set It Up in Zeo

Here’s how you align vehicle profiles with real-world limits:

  1. Head to Settings → Vehicles
  2. Click Add Vehicle or edit an existing one
  3. Define key specs:
  • Vehicle Type (truck, in this case)
  • Max Load Capacity (kg/lbs)
  • Max Volume (m³)
  • Margin Capacity (%) – buffer for safe parcel placement
  • Margin Volume (%) – avoid jam-packed cargo bays
  • Max Distance – ideal for range-limited EVs or heavy trucks
  • Monthly Operating Cost – optional, but helps for cost benchmarking

Add an Extra Layer of Safety with Live Tracking and In-App Chat

Once a route is live, you need visibility and real-time support. You can monitor vehicle positions in real time, view route progress, and detect any delays the moment they happen.

If there’s a diversion or unexpected halt, the system flags it immediately. This helps your support teams stay informed and lets you take timely action to resolve issues before they affect the schedule.

Zeo’s live tracking and built-in driver chat add that extra layer of control as a part of effective fleet management.

Real-Time Tracking Benefits
With tracking enabled, you can monitor exactly where your vehicle is, how long it stays at a stop, and when it deviates from the route.

That kind of minute-level visibility allows you to:

  • View location progress as it happens without manual refreshes
  • Spot potential delays early and notify stakeholders
  • Provide accurate ETAs to customers, ops, or warehouse teams
  • Identify idle time or unplanned detours without waiting for field reports

Communicate Instantly with Drivers
Need to reroute due to an incident? Want to confirm a site instruction? Zeo’s dashboard features a direct chat function for in-app messaging between dispatchers and drivers.

Driver Communication
You don’t need to rely on calls, third-party apps, or slow SMS threads. With direct chat, instructions are received and confirmed instantly in case of route correction, safety warning, or a stop adjustment.

  • Message any driver without switching to another app
  • Keep instructions clear, visible, and centralized
  • Support drivers on the road without phone calls or delay

For sensitive loads and complex trips, this connection matters as it keeps decision-makers and drivers on the same thread.

Conclusion

When your fleet hauls large vehicles or sensitive cargo, every detail matters — from the roads you choose to the way you distribute weight. One wrong turn or overlooked parameter can lead to delays, safety issues, or even regulatory trouble.

Zeo Route Planner gives you the control you need. From avoiding high-risk routes to balancing load capacity and tracking vehicles live, it’s a system built to support real-world fleet challenges.
