How to create routes on Yandex Maps

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Be it for a personal trip or a business delivery, we often use mapping tools to guide us to our destinations. While there is a plethora of mapping tools available out there, each one of us has a preference. It can depend on our needs, geography, frequency of use, functionalities, and other factors.

Talking about one of the most popular mapping and navigation tools in Russia, Yandex Maps stands out. People in Russia and neighboring regions turn to Yandex Maps for route planning. Right from individuals to small businesses, this tool proves to be helpful by offering step-wise navigation and routing support.

Yandex Maps is designed for basic route planning needs. But how do you really create a route in Yandex Maps? Moreover, how beneficial is it considering a few drawbacks?

Benefits of Using Yandex Maps for Route Planning

Yandex Maps offers basic route planning. It is highly beneficial for individuals and businesses with simple routing needs. It offers various benefits:

  1. User-friendly Interface
Yandex Maps is designed for simplicity. Everyone can use this tool for mapping and navigation without having to go through any complex steps. The user-friendly interface makes it a popular choice for people in Russia. You can easily enter the start and end stops in your route and also choose the mode of transportation for your journey.
  2. Real-Time Traffic Updates
With real-time traffic updates, Yandex Maps keeps users informed about the high-traffic areas and helps them make informed decisions. They can avoid routes with high traffic probabilities and choose faster and less congested routes. This helps in saving valuable time and fuel for businesses trying to enhance their profits.
  3. Basic Multi-Stop Route Planning
It happens quite seldom that our routes have only two points. In majority of the cases, especially for delivery businesses, a route includes multiple stops. Yandex Maps supports multi-stop route planning. You can add multiple stops and then freeze the start and stop location. However, it offers basic route optimization for multi-stop routes. This might not suit growing businesses with advanced route optimization needs.
  4. Offline Navigation for Poor Network Connectivity
What if your routes include areas with poor network connectivity? You don’t have to worry about that if you are using Yandex Maps for route planning. This tool offers offline navigation support. You can create the route and set the navigation. Even if you run out of network connectivity, Yandex Maps will still guide you through to your destination.

Drawbacks of Yandex Maps for Business Use

While Yandex Maps serves personal navigation needs well, businesses that require route optimization, driver management, and efficient logistics coordination may struggle with its limitations. Here are the key drawbacks:

  1. Limited Route Optimization Capabilities
Yandex Maps allows users to add multiple stops, but it does not automatically optimize the order for the shortest distance or fastest delivery time. Businesses that rely on efficient Route Planning must manually arrange their stops, leading to increased mileage, wasted fuel, and delayed deliveries. Without AI-powered route sequencing, businesses risk higher operational costs and lower efficiency.
  2. No Fleet Management or Driver Coordination
Businesses with multiple drivers require fleet tracking, driver assignments, and live route updates to streamline operations. Yandex Maps lacks these features, making it difficult for managers to monitor vehicle locations, adjust schedules, or assign deliveries dynamically. Without proper fleet coordination, businesses lose visibility and control over their operations.
  3. No Automated Scheduling for Deliveries or Service Calls
Companies that handle time-sensitive deliveries or field service visits need a system that can automatically schedule stops based on driver availability, service time windows, and priority levels. Yandex Maps does not support automated scheduling, forcing businesses to manually plan each route, increasing the chances of inefficient scheduling and missed deadlines.
  4. No Advanced Reporting and Analytics
Tracking delivery performance, fuel efficiency, and route effectiveness is critical for optimizing logistics operations. Yandex Maps does not provide detailed analytics, making it difficult for businesses to analyze driver performance, fuel consumption, or delivery success rates. Without insights, companies cannot identify cost-saving opportunities or improve efficiency.
  5. Not Built for High-Volume Logistics
For businesses that handle dozens or hundreds of deliveries daily, Yandex Maps is not an ideal solution. The system lacks the ability to batch optimize routes, assign tasks dynamically, or manage large fleets efficiently. Companies dealing with large-scale logistics need an advanced route optimization solution that goes beyond basic navigation.
