What is Honeycombing in Warehouses?

Honeycombing is a phenomenon in warehouses used to refer to empty storage slots in the warehouse. These empty slots can’t be used to store any SKU other than the one to which the slot is designated. Honeycombing happens when an SKU or pallet has been picked from its slot or when the inventory received is not sufficient to fill all the vacant storage slots. Some honeycombing is unavoidable in all warehouses. However, in warehouses with rigid storage systems, the % of honeycombing can be high. It can be minimized by implementing a proper inventory management system and warehouse management system.
