TL;DR: In Ontario, a Class G license is the standard driver’s license that allows you to operate cars, vans, and small trucks through a graduated three-stage system (G1, G2, Full G). As of 2026, this progressive licensing system helps new drivers build experience safely while gaining full driving privileges. For delivery businesses managing drivers with various license levels, Zeo Route Planner’s skill-based driver assignment feature automatically matches routes to qualified drivers, helping fleet teams save 2+ hours daily.

Getting a driver’s license is a significant milestone for many people since it gives them the flexibility and independence to traverse the highways. The Class G License is the most prevalent form of driver’s license in Ontario, Canada, enabling persons to operate most vehicles, including automobiles, vans, and light trucks.

In this blog article, we will discuss what a Class G License is, the many sorts of Class G Licenses, the prerequisites for obtaining one, and the step-by-step procedure for obtaining a G1, G2, and Full Class G License.

What is a Class G License?

A Class G license is Ontario’s standard driver’s license, allowing individuals to drive cars, vans, and small trucks. It signifies that the license holder has demonstrated the necessary knowledge, skills, and competence to operate these vehicles safely on the road.

As of 2026, the Ontario government continues to use the graduated driver licensing (GDL) system for Class G licenses, which has proven effective in reducing collision rates among new drivers. This progressive approach ensures that drivers develop their skills gradually under controlled conditions before gaining full driving privileges.

What are its Benefits?

The primary benefits of a class G license are:

  1. It never expires. When drivers reach a particular age, they simply need to complete subsequent tests.
  2. Having a G License may help you save money on auto insurance.
  3. A G license allows you to drive with few limitations or qualified passengers.
  4. It provides the foundation for upgrading to commercial licenses if you pursue professional driving careers.
  5. Full G license holders can supervise G1 drivers, expanding employment opportunities in driving instruction or fleet management.
  6. The graduated system builds confidence and reduces the likelihood of serious accidents during the learning phase.

What are its Types?

There are 3 types of Class G licenses in Ontario:

  1. G1 License: The G1 license is the learner’s permit, allowing individuals to practice driving under certain restrictions.
  2. G2 License: The G2 license is an intermediate license that grants more driving privileges but still imposes certain limitations. For example, G2 drivers under 20 cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
  3. Full G License: The full G license is the final stage, allowing unrestricted driving privileges. The holder can operate cars, vans, and small trucks without limitations or conditions.

Understanding License Restrictions and Their Impact on Fleet Operations

For businesses managing delivery fleets or transportation services, understanding the different Class G license levels becomes crucial for operational efficiency. G1 drivers must always be accompanied by a fully licensed driver, making them unsuitable for independent delivery routes. G2 drivers face time restrictions and passenger limitations that can affect scheduling flexibility.

Modern fleet management requires careful consideration of these licensing restrictions when assigning routes and schedules. According to Transport Canada’s collision statistics, graduated licensing systems have contributed to significant reductions in accidents among new drivers, making these restrictions valuable for both safety and insurance considerations.

What are the Requirements for a Class G License?

To obtain a Class G license in Ontario, you must meet several requirements, including:

  • Being at least 16 years old
  • Passing a vision test
  • Passing a written knowledge test
  • Providing identification documents
  • Paying the applicable fees
  • Completing mandatory waiting periods between license levels
  • Demonstrating practical driving skills through road tests
  • Meeting any medical requirements if applicable

How to Obtain a G1, G2, & Full Class G License?

Below mentioned steps will give you an idea on how you can obtain a G1, G2, and Full Class G license:

  1. Study for the written test and familiarize yourself with the Ontario Driver’s Handbook and study the rules of the road.
  2. Visit a Service Ontario center to apply for your G1 license and provide the necessary identification documents.
  3. Take a vision test to ensure you meet the minimum requirements for safe driving.
  4. Pay the required fees for your G1 license application and any subsequent tests.
  5. Take the G1 written test, which assesses your knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.
  6. After passing the written test, you will receive a G1 license to practice driving with certain restrictions.
  7. Regularly practice driving under the supervision of an experienced driver. Log a minimum of 12 months of driving experience before proceeding to the next stage.
  8. Once you have completed 8 months of driving experience with your G1 license, you can book a G2 road test.
  9. With your G2 license, you can drive independently, but with some restrictions. Practice your skills and gain experience on the road.
  10. After a minimum of 12 months with your G2 license, you can book a road test to obtain your Full G Class License.

Cost Considerations and Financial Planning

As of 2026, obtaining a full Class G license involves several fees that new drivers should budget for. Beyond the initial testing fees, drivers should consider costs for driving lessons, vehicle insurance at different license levels, and potential retesting fees if road tests aren’t passed on the first attempt.

Insurance premiums typically decrease as drivers progress through the license levels, with full G license holders often receiving the best rates. This graduated approach to both licensing and insurance costs reflects the reduced risk profile that comes with increased driving experience and demonstrated competency.
